“The Color Purple”

I recently read “The Color Purple,” by Alice Walker (1982). Here is my interpretation of the THEME, or basic message, of the novel:

The African diaspora can be reunited, not at the political level, but at the spiritual level. The sons and daughters of Africa can be reunited on the basis of animism, the native religion of Africa, which sees spirits in all things and communes constantly with the spirit world. This ultimate reunion should be sought by all Blacks the world over. Ultimately, they will form a worldwide spiritual community, the Chosen People of the spirit.
